Razer Megalodon

The Razer Megalodon Gaming Headset 7.1 is among the best looking headsets on the market today. It is made entirely in black, and each of the sides on the headset features blue LEDs that make it look particularly good in dark rooms. It’s a gaming headset made entirely by gamers – for gamers, as Razer state in their mission statement.

Razer indeed goes the extra mile making their headphones look amazingly cool – just check out the design of the box the headset comes in, to the left of the text here.

The Razer Megalodon is extremely comfortable and has a surprisingly low weight. Which will be nice for gamers who like to play games for long stretches of time.

The Microphone of the Razer Megalodon is well built and very sturdy. It sits in a natural position when in use, and pivots nicely out of view when you don’t need it. Sadly the lack of hiding the microphone completely prevents the headset to be used anywhere else than your computer – but honestly, we gamers get these headphones to play games on a computer, not to listen to music on the bus.

The visual layout of the external USB drive that is attached to the cord is also very appealing and features the same cool blue LEDs that sit on each side of the headset.

Comfort is a huge plus for the Razer Megalodon Gaming Headset.

The first big advantage you’ll notice is that the ear cups are huge and it fits even my giant ears. I think if Dobby the House Elf could fit his ears into these – extremely comfortable and does not cause any pain to your ears.

The Razer Megalodon features real fabric padding in favour of the more standard fake leather that many headset producers use for their gaming headsets. I find this quite comfortable; mainly the top head strap sits almost unnoticeable comfortable on the top of my head.

Features

The Razer Megalodon apparently comes with some top-notch features, which we have come to expect from Razer. The headset features a very long cord (3.3 meters) and so will accommodate any set you might have as a gamer. The only thing you’ve got to be careful with is to roll over the cord with your hair, but even then you might be okay because Razer has layered fabric around the cord to make it more sturdy.

The Microphone features a compelling clarity, some of my teammates even asked me: Wow dude, did you get a new microphone? The noise cancellation just works amazingly well, and you can say that for the cups too – when you wear the headset, you are submerged into the game.

Quality gaming headsets like this one require advanced drivers to work, and so Razer decided to build this into the volume control unit that is attached to the cord. The functionality of the volume controller is excellent and looks great. It’s bigger than for other headsets but  does take up quite some space. This is a blessing and a curse though because the size means it’s not flopping around the room. It features anti-slippery rubber on the bottom to keep it reliable on your desktop.

Sound

The Razer Megalodon features very crisp and clear sound. Obviously being a 7.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset, you get to feel this in the games that support it. I recently played the new FallOut and oh my god was it exciting, people in the game whispering behind your back, the leaves bustling in the wind – what an experience!

If your game or system does not support the 7.1, Surround the headset will work as a standard Stereo Headset. The quality is decent, but not great compared to proper Stereo Headsets.

All in all, Razer is setting the bar very high, and together with the comfortable ear cups that disconnect you from outside noise, you are putting yourself in the driver’s seat as to what sound goes.

Gaming

I already briefly touched on the gaming aspect, how awesome the 7.1 Surround Sound is to play within modern games. You feel like part of another world and don’t about noises or anything else going on around you in reality. The best gaming headset I have ever tried for sure.

I also mentioned how comfortable the headset is to wear, which means that when I go to LAN parties with my friends, I can wear the headset the entire time. That is assuming I don’t want to talk to the people around me; the headset cuts you off!

I play quite a bit of counter strike and call of duty, and I was impressed with the accuracy of the sound – it’s super important to know where your enemies are coming from.

Razer Megalodon Price & Value

The Razer Megalodon was revolutionary when it came out, being among the first 7.1 Surround Gaming Headsets on the market. This was reflected in the price. Luckily today the shifts in the technology industry and new production methods have brought the prices down on previously released hardware – including gaming headsets.

This means that you can get this top piece of headwear for just over $100 on Amazon. I prefer Amazon because of their long-standing history of providing excellent services

If you feel like the headset is just out of your price range, you can always read my review of the Razer Carcharias. It’s like a junior version of the Razer Megalodon, less the 7.1 Surround experience naturally.

Verdict

I love Razer and their Gaming Gear I have to say. It always looks great and offers incredible quality. All these things also resonate in the Razer Megalodon 7.1 USB Gaming Headset, but I’m missing a few things for it to make five stars here on the Best Gaming Headset Reviews site.

The design and comfortability score high, with great comfort and excellent design. The part where it loses some star value is the lack of great synergy when using old drivers. For instance, if you are playing a game that doesn’t support 7.1 Surround sound you get a compromised emulation of Stereo that sounds a bit muffled.

Overall though the sound experience you DO get when it works (note you can also adjust all these things manually, so maybe I’m just not savvy enough to do that) is good and what you would expect from a top company like Razer.

It is worth noting that you don’t get the real 7.1 experience with this headset and that’s a big shame. If you want that you’ll have to consider the Razer Tiamat, which admittedly is a bit more expensive and requires a good, dedicated 7.1 sound card to function properly.

If you want good, affordable 7.1 virtual surrounds, the Razer Megalodon is a good pick, and it’s not overly expensive.

The best place to buy Razer Megalodon 7.1 Gaming Headset is in my opinion on Amazon – They have the best price and free shipping.
